J Academy Soft Skills Manual


 

Basketball4Life

The Basketball4Life Manual has been written to assist basketball coaches to facilitate positive youth development among Namibian youth (boys and girls) who like to play basketball. It has been developed by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), working in partnership with the Namibia Basketball Federation.

The manual seeks to promote sport as a tool for both positive youth development and the adoption of healthy lifestyles. The principles set out in this manual can be used by basketball coaches operating in basketball clubs/ teams who wish to promote the holistic development of their players or can be used by basketball coaches working in NGOs where sport is used specifically as means of reaching young people and developing their life skills. The manual can be used by coaches coaching youth under 20 years of age, but the content of the healthy lifestyles section has most relevance to the under 13 and under 15 age groups who are transitioning through adolescence from childhood to adulthood.

Football4Life

YDF Manual for Environmental Awareness

The foundation module — the YDF Manual for Coaches — still constitutes the first introduction to the complex topic of environmental awareness, whereas the short module on ‘Environmental Awareness’ builds on the different forms of reaction that are possible and elaborates in detail on tips for taking action. YDF is convinced that every coach needs to build on general basic-training skills in order to implement the ‘YDF Manual for Environmental Awareness’ successfully and, as such, needs to be familiar with the content of the ‘YDF Manual for Coaches’.

Learn to Relax

This audio recording is designed to teach you how to relax, to escape from the stress of everyday life, forget your worries and just let go. Ever thought that it would be nice to just relax completely? Well that’s exactly what you are going to do as you listen to this recording. In the first part of this recording Emma Thurston and Norman Brook take you step-by-step through a full self directed relaxation session which will last for about 30 minutes. Self directed relaxation aims to relax each of the body’s muscle groups while emphasising slow, easy breathing and visualisation of the tension flowing out of the body. The objective of this training is to gradually help to reduce the time needed to achieve complete relaxation. While initially it will take several minutes to go through these instructions, with some practice greater and greater relaxation should be achieved in less time.
In the second part of the recording you will be taken step-by-step through a Progressive Muscular relaxation session which will also last for about 30 minutes. To get you to relax you are asked to perform a series of exercises. When a muscle is contracted and then relaxed it returns to a state that is more relaxed than before the contraction took place. To achieve a totally relaxed state we need to perform a series of exercises that contract and relax all the muscles in the body. Eventually only a few seconds will be needed to achieve full body relaxation.
